We all know bees are in trouble, but are we saving the 'right' bees?
Hawk Honey came to February’s meeting with his illustrated talk 'The Forgotten Bees', to tell us more.
Hawk - who works at the Suffolk Wildlife Trust - explained that the bee in trouble was not the honey bee, but solitary bees such as the mason and mining bees.
He outlined the main problems, such as poor habitat management, over concentration of honeybee hives, as well as climate change - impacting our native flowers and sadly us.
Hawk described the lifestyle of these bees and how we can help them survive - from providing breeding sites to selective mowing and planting 'bee friendly' flowers.
Hawk’s talk fitted perfectly with 'Show The Love' month, a WI/Climate Coalition national campaign with members making its symbol - green hearts - for the monthly competition.

It was an enjoyable and informative evening – Hawk even managed to convince some that wasps are our friends!
