Schools in Saffron Walden and Dunmow competed in the Strachan Quiz, hosted by the local United Nations Association and named after Quaker James Strachan.
The quiz was won by Saffron Walden County High School, with Helena Romanes School in Dunmow as the runners up.
Questions were asked in eight categories including world history, culture, conflicts and geography - plus questions on the UN and other world organisations.

The questions were set by branch convenor David Barrs, who said: "It is important to keep the UN flag waving, particularly at such a difficult moments in world history.
"The quiz helps young people understand how the world works and what he UN can and cannot do. Judging by their knowledge and enthusiasm, the future is in good hands."
