Clavering Church is hosting a free heritage day for the first time since the 1970s, celebrating the history of the church.

The event takes place from 10am to 5pm on Saturday, September 9, and features talks and tours, displays on church history, crafts for children and a church history quiz.

There will be five talks throughout the day, on the church in the landscape, the effects of the Reformation, medieval stained glass, artistry in the church, and stories and legends.

At the start of the event a new history corner will be launched in the church, including an album of church history and a folder of church inscriptions - which have never been publicly available before - to help family historians locate their ancestors' graves in the churchyard.

Representatives from Saffron Walden Museum are displaying church objects from the museum's collections, and organising craft activities.

The heritage day has been organised by Clavering local history recorder Jacqueline Cooper and members of Clavering History Group, who will be on hand to help anyone seeking further information.

There will also be refreshments and snacks on sale all day. Parking is available in Pelham Road, with a car park in the churchyard for the less able.
