An artist and former evacuee will share his experiences during wartime as part of an upcoming exhibition at Saffron Walden Museum.

'Evacuee: A Wartime Childhood' features the work of author and artist Brian Sanders, whose career as a professional illustrator spans five decades.

Scenes from Saffron Walden and the surrounding area from Brian's childhood as an evacuee dominate the exhibition, accompanied by World War II-era objects and photographs from the museum's collections.

These include books featuring images of Bridge End Gardens, St Mary's Church, Bridge House, The Eight Bells pub and the Boys British School, as well as the old cinema and public baths.

The exhibition will also showcase Brian's artwork for book jackets, magazines, stamp and coin designs and work for the TV show Mad Men, as well as on-set illustrations from Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Brian will be holding a Q&A on his art career and the exhibition, and signing copies of his first evacuee book at the Museum Shop Sunday event - a national initiative to promote the museum retail sector - from 2pm to 4.30pm on Sunday, November 26.

The Evacuee: A Wartime Childhood book is available from the museum shop for £8.99.

During the exhibition, the museum will also be producing a free walking trail with a self-guided tour map, capturing moments and places around the town from the books featured in the displays.

The exhibition will run at Saffron Walden Museum until March 17, 2024.

The museum has thanked those who have contributed to establishing the exhibition, including the Gibson Walden Fund for helping with the financing, and Rachel Yates from Chicken Shed for originally initiating the exhibition.

Saffron Walden Museum is open from 10am to 4.30pm on Wednesdays to Saturdays, and from 2pm to 4.30pm on Sundays.

Tuesdays are reserved for schools and other pre-booked activities, and the museum is closed on Mondays.

Admission is £2.50 for adults, £1.25 for concessions and free for under-18s.

Events coming up at the museum in December include a Christmas paper wreath making workshop on December 2 and a printing workshop on December 5.
