A historic manor house in Ickleton which was owned by the first premier of Queensland is on the market for £5 million.

Caldrees Manor in Abbey Street has nine bedrooms (including six en-suites), a billiard room, an Aga kitchen with adjoining breakfast room and a vaulted reception hall with a carved grand staircase.

The Grade II-listed Georgian property incorporates two self-contained two bedroom apartments, each with their own sitting room and kitchen.

Caldrees Manor is the former home of Sir Robert Herbert (1831-1905), Queensland's first, and youngest, premier.

He was born in Brighton and became premier of Queensland in 1859, at the age of 28. A blue plaque at the manor is dedicated to his memory.

According to local historians, the grounds of the manor were extended by exchanging land with Clare Hall in 1870 and 1884, and at this time a stream was diverted to create ornamental ponds.

The property is now up for sale by Savills for £5,000,000.

Property agent Lucy Banks, director in the residential sales team at Savills Cambridge, said: "Tucked away behind its boundary wall within the heart of the village, Caldrees Manor has been in the same family for 35 years and is a true Georgian gem.

"With a rich history that dates back to the 16th and 17th centuries, the property has been cherished and sympathetically upgraded by the current owners to create grand yet comfortable and spacious accommodation over three floors.

"The exquisite internal detailing – including intricate cornicing, fluted architraves, period fireplaces, panelled doors and high ceilings – is complemented by exceptional grounds and gardens that make this an extraordinarily rare package.

"It really took my breath away."
