Rev Lynne Green, general secretary of the Baptist Union, also spoke about the church's role in setting up the national organisation in the early 19th century, and how many members became ministers or had leading roles in the wider denomination.
She reminded the congregation not to dwell on the past, but to "be inclusive, respond to cultural changes and find new ways to serve the community".
After the service the congregation enjoyed an alfresco lunch, which was served to 150 people at Pinkneys Manor.
