The Huw Johnson Club, a Stansted-based charity which supports people with learning disabilities, recently celebrated its 50th anniversary.

Last month the club hosted a party to mark the occasion, with nearly 100 people attending - including current and past members and volunteers, family members and supporters.

Attendees enjoyed an afternoon tea and a dance to music by the Bishop's Stortford Ukulele Society.

The Huw Johnson Club was founded by the late Marion and Tom Johnson, who set up the club in 1974 in memory of their son Huw, six months after he died from muscular dystrophy.

The club began as a support network for families caring for a child with learning disabilities, and has since evolved into a social club for adults with learning disabilities.

There are currently more than 20 members aged 25-plus supported by the club, with a range of conditions including Down syndrome and muscular dystrophy.

Some require full-time care, while others live on their own with carer or parent support.

The club is entirely funded by donations and run by volunteers, and some of the club's members and volunteers have been with the charity for nearly the full 50 years.

Meetings are held on one Thursday a month at St John's Church Hall in Stansted.
