Gardeners displayed their finest flowers and vegetables at the Saffron Walden Horticultural Society Autumn Show.

The event was held at Sewards End Village Hall on Sunday, September 29, with more than 100 exhibits on display, including many from new members.

Chairman of the society David Livermore handed out awards to the winners.

Vera Willson won the Babbington Smith Trophy for the most points in the show, with a three-way tie for runner-up between Robin Crouchman, Sharon Davey and Alan Taylor.

Vera entered many successful exhibits into the show, winning the following trophies: The Harry Green Trophy for best bloom in the rose section, the Harry Green Cup for best floral arrangement, the Walker Trophy for most points in the domestic section and the Saffron Walden Plate for best exhibit in the vegetable section.

Meanwhile David Livermore won the Ellis Rooke Cup for gaining the most points in the combined shows of 2024, with Sharon Davey as the runner-up.

David also won the Sewell Cup in the vegetable section. This year has been difficult for vegetable growers and there were fewer entries than usual, without a single marrow or courgette exhibited.

Sharon Davey won the Acrow Bowl for most points in the flower and fruit sections, while Alan Taylor won the Joe Cole Memorial Trophy for best bloom in the dahlia classes, with nine "magnificent" blooms for which the judge awarded an RHS exceptional display certificate.

In the children's classes, Chloe Hollidge and her brother Jack jointly won the Eric the Hedgehog Trophy for the most points in the junior section.

Show secretary Peter Cranfield said: "Thank you to everyone who took part, whether by exhibiting, helping on the day, or just coming along to enjoy the show.

"Congratulations to all the prize winners."

The society normally holds its annual autumn horticultural show and a summer rose and flower show, but is considering holding three shows next year.
