Saffron Walden scratch team completed their pre-season matches with a 6-0 victory over St Neots at the Windmill Club last week.
In a game that saw their first choice pairings hit the course, they did not disappoint with the season ahead.
Cam Brown and James Goodfellow bounced back from losing the first hole to birdie the sixth and were two up at the turn. A missed putt on the 13th saw Walden go three up with three holes to play, and they eventually won 3&1.
Ryan Adair and Dick Southall let a two-hole lead slip by three-putting the 11th and 12th but came back to win 2&1. The defining moment of the game was provided by Southall who hit a well executed flop shot over a grassy mound to two foot for par on the 16th. A powerful five wood tee shot by Adair at the 17th set up a seven iron approach by Southall to seal a birdie.
In last pairing, professionals Olly Tuck and Mark Reeve for Walden were up throughout the match. Tuck’s birdie putt from off the green on the 16th set them on their way with a 2&1 victory.
Graham Goodman, team captain, said afterwards: “A good finish to our pre-season with the onset of the league versus Brampton park in a few weeks. Throughout the run up we have given young players a run out for the future. “We have a powerful team this year and the secret to our success will be to integrate the new players to form the right partnerships.
“We have a training season with the ladies scratch team next week which should help us all for the matches ahead.”
