YOUNG trampolining star Matthew Burson has scooped his club’s first ever national medal.

The 12-year-old was one of three Cambridge Cangaroos Trampoline Club members to take part in the British National Finals held in Birmingham at the weekend.

Burson, who qualified for the final in the second gala of the season in Bath – becoming the club’s first ever medallist at a gala – took bronze in the under 15 National C Boys category.

There was a short wait for the Ickleton youngster as he was on late morning and the giant scoreboard wasn’t working down on the floor, so he and coach Tony Fagelman were unaware of the scores. But after the first round, he was in first place. A solid, if unspectacular second routine saw Burson qualify for the finals in second place.

Burson, performing seventh in the order, kept his nerve and pulled out his best routine of the weekend and the highest score of the season.

This fantastic effort saw him take third place, with less than 0.15 separating fourth to second in the closest of competitions.

Cambridge Cangaroos head coach Tony Fagelman was delighted. He said: “Matthew has done magnificently and I and the club are so proud of his achievement throughout this season.

“All our national performers have been a true credit to the club and sport with Matthew excelling in his performances.”
