The club where a Paralympian champion from Saffron Walden started his sporting journey is looking to help the athlete on his long road to recovery from a serious accident.

George Peasgood suffered a severe brain injury after an accident in October of last year when out training on his bike.

It left him in a serious condition and in need of life-saving treatment from the staff at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge.

Now at the Regional Neurological Rehabilitation Unit, he is receiving support from specialists in speech therapy, occupational therapy, physiotherapy and psychology.

The 27-year-old, who won bronze in the C4 men’s road time trial at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, took up triathlon and cycling at WaldenTRI along with parents David and Teresa.

And the club are now using two of their events this year to raise money for Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust

People entering either WaldenJNR’s duathlon on March 25 or WaldenTRI’s triathlon on May 14 will be asked for donations as part of the club’s efforts to thank the doctors and emergency services.

Ben Bely, part of the WaldenTRI race committee, said: “We are so pleased to also be raising money for such a good cause and to show George the huge amount of love and support there is for him and his family.

“He is progressing well but still has a long way to go on his journey to recovery.

“These races are really friendly and open to all. They are a great chance to have a first go at a triathlon, or to compete against friends and rivals for a podium place.”

The duathlon will be at Carver Barracks airfield and will be the first race in the Eastern Regional Children’s League.

Age categories for children go from eight upwards while there will also be an adult’s event too.

Race distances start with a 400m run, 1.5km bike, and 200m run for the youngest athletes, and increase to a 2km run, 8km bike, and 800m run for entrants aged 16 and over.

The WaldenTRI WT23 Triathlon will take place at Lord Butler Leisure Centre.

It is an early season sprint and super sprint event and is ideal for athletes of all abilities, from novices to seasoned competitors.

The distances are a 200m pool swim, 12km bike on local roads, and 2.5km off-road run for the super sprint, increasing to 400m, 23km, and 5km for the sprint, which also includes a team relay category.

Entries are open to those age 16 and over at www.entrycentral.com/Walden_Triathlon

WaldenTRI is also inviting entries from para triathletes. They should get in touch so that arrangements can be made to ensure they are fully supported in the race experience.
