Saffron Walden Cricket Club suffered a narrow loss on day one of the East Anglian Premier League as they were beaten at home by Mildenhall by two wickets.
Losing the toss, the hosts were put into bat and lost early wickets although 40 from Tom Bonham and a pair of 55s for Harry Gallian (55) and the swashbuckling Ben Harris helped them post 203-9 in their 50 overs.
The visitors got their innings off to a much better start though flyer as Matt Allen (45) and Saif Zaib (69) put on 65 for the first wicket.
Walden's Ashleigh Cox (2-50) and Daniel Farmer (2-44) led the fightback before fielders Henry Wilson and Aussie Brynn Mendel came together to run out danger man Joe Tetley.
A tight finish followed as more wickets fell but the game was won in the 45th over, eight wickets down.
Skipper Josh Down said: "It was good to finally get out there and clear the cobwebs. The weather has completely halted our preparations."
They travel to Copdock and Old Ipswichians on Saturday, the same opposition that the women and girls' face in the Two Counties Cricket Championship.
The second team start their Cambs & Hunts Premier League Division Two campaign at home to Godmanchester while the thirds are at Cambourne in CCA Senior League Division Two.
